Earring Designs

I'm the type of gal people stop buying earrings for because I constantly lose them. I have a whole collection of singles hanging out just waiting to be reinvented. Yesterday I tried out some new earring designs playing with different combinations of ear wires, patina, and gems. I'd love to hear feedback about the ones you like. Also, if you have any preferences about the type of ear wire you prefer, I would dig your input. I love the look of French ear wires, but if the adornment isn't hefty then this is the type of earring that I tend to donate to some lonely stretch of road or couch crevice. I'm starting to wonder if I'm only rated for lever back ear wires.

I'm also featuring one of my new hummingbird charms in these earring samples. They are just so darn cute, and I made molds that face either direction.

  1. Well, they are all gorgeous! As for ear wires, my preference would be either the kidney backed wire or the lever backs simply because every time I get french ear wires, I end up having to work and bend them so they don't tip forward and work their way out. Love the birds!

  2. I love them all too. Not fair to ask for a favorite but I'd say if I were buying them for myself, I would prefer the oxidized lever backs...with ANY stone. they are all lovely!

  3. I love your hummingbird charms! They are so magical! Well, the ones that I'm drawn to the most are the carnelian antiqued kidney and the peridot silver french. The carnelian one reminds me of the rich, dramatic color of the ruby-throated hummingbird and the peridot feels light, airy and springy!

  4. I really like the antiqued kidney's with your work. I might take a hammer to the bend though. It would add a handmade look and a bit of extra strength to the wire. And use a round nose plier to close up the dangle loop. I also like elongated kidneys. Don't know where to get 'em though. Have you thought about making your own earwires?

  5. I like the antiqued look best. As for earwires, I've never had a problem with any falling out, so I would say I like the french ones best. The carnelian and and kyanite are the 2 stones I like best, although it's very hard to narrow down my favorites because they are all lovely!

  6. Thanks ladies for all the great feedback and complements!

Lora, thanks for the suggestion of pounding the kidney ear wire for a handmade look. Actually all the ear wires in my shop are handmade, but for this experiment I decided to use prefabricated one's I had on hand. I have to fix my jig to make the kidney one's work better, but I'll keep trying :)

The lever backs were new for me. I kind of enjoy the industrial look, but have never actually bought a pair of earrings like this for myself!

  7. I like the french earwires, when I make them I try to lengthen the back part and put a little upturn in the wire, so they won't flip - and lately I've started making them so they lean forward toward the front part, in a kind of 'Q' shape, so the opening at the bottom is minimal. I know what you mean about donating to the furniture, that's my solution because I do feel bad when I lose one.

  8. Love your hummingbirds!!!

In terms of functionality, I prefer leverbacks. They aren't necessarily the prettiest, but they will always have a partner in life.
