Shoot the Moon

silver star charm necklace jewelry turquoiseLone Star, Beth Hemmila (Hint Jewelry):
sterling beadball chain, turquoise, and fine silver star charm

I grew up playing the card game Euchre, where four people work in pairs to slam the other team. Occasionally, one lucky person might feel like they struck gold with some sweet cards and choose to "shoot the moon" alone, leaving their partner to become a passive observer of a fantastic glittering star.

Sometimes I see this metaphor happening in my partnership. Stuff happens while I sit idly by, twiddling my thumbs, doing nothing. Having been on my own until my mid-thirties, I found marriage to be a strange letting go of things that I had done for myself as a way to create an effective team. Don't get me wrong, some things I gladly traded in like cleaning toilets or mowing the lawn for the joy of taking out the garbage and doing laundry. Nevertheless, I believe that as a single person I felt and acted more empowered on a regular basis.

This week I did my own version of shooting the moon and used Turbo Tax on Hint Jewelry. Gosh darn, this experience was seriously empowering! Working through every problem and question alone felt like revisiting an old part of myself -- that super girl that believed I could figure anything out given the right tools and opportunity.

I learned so much from my Turbo Tax discovery process that I've revised all my spreadsheets and bookkeeping so that tax year 2010 will feel effortless. This year I want to explore the financial side of business more and more through workshops and reading. Hold on to your hats because this weekend I'm attending a tax workshop for small business offered by the Oregon College of Arts and Craft, and I hope to share what I've learned come February. Get excited because numbers have never felt like so much fun!

Behind the Scenes: Repetition, Mastery, and Valuing Craftsmanship

silver lotus blossom charm necklace jewelry braceletZen Lotus, Beth Hemmila (Hint Jewelry):
fine silver lotus blossom charm

I opened up Hint Jewelry in 2008, but it wasn't until last week that I actually valued my craftsmanship. I was hand pressing some new charms when everything started to click. I rolled up a ball of metal clay, pressed it carefully into a mold, gently lifted up the edges, and thought "wow, this charm is utterly perfect!"

In a simple moment of pure artistry, I saw a whole lifetime wrapped up in one little charm -- twenty years of drawing, four years of printmaking, two years of ceramics, fifteen years of knitting, a year of baking bread, and thirty years of making sandcastles. I've looked at, read about, evaluated, and made choices about art for over twenty years, yet it took me two years and thousands of reassurances later to fully understand that people appreciate and purchase Hint Jewelry charms because they contain the whole blueprint of my creative journey.

I'm sharing this personal story, because making art doesn't always feel so complete. In fact, most of the time it can be downright uncomfortable and frustrating.

One of my favorite movies from the 80s is the The Karate Kid for I always wanted a teacher like Mr. Miyagi to show me the way to mastery.

Repetition = Mastery = Success

One of the concepts I learned through teaching is that the number one thing all people want to feel is a sense of success. To achieve feelings of success you must first obtain mastery, and the ONLY way to master something is through the experience of repetition -- doing something over and over and over again.

The reality is that most people quit when things start to get uncomfortable or boring, so they never experience enough repetition to reach a place of mastery. Here is where I like to keep Mr. Miyagi's wax on, wax off lesson in mind. Learning hurts. You should be crying, confused, swearing, falling down, screwing up, wasting time, tripping over yourself, and looking like a blubbering idiot. If you aren't experiencing anything close to discomfort then you're probably not learning to your fullest capacity.

My two greatest stumbling blocks to mastery are wanting every moment to be easy and running away when something feels boring. I don't have a Mr. Miyagi that dishes out tough love when I complain or commands me to stay present when I want to check out. All I have is a commitment to myself and the faith that repetition is the key.

Last week when I pressed that wonderful charm, I had a small payoff for my hard work. I saw that by going back day after day over the course of two years of making Hint Jewelry charms, I experienced one of those moments of perfection where the truth of my value is undeniably clear.

When you feel a sense of success you might find yourself doing a little dance and exclaiming "nailed it!" However, last week I realized the true magic of mastery is a quiet, still wisdom that builds from the inside. A confidence in your authenticity. A fullness that roots you to the ground.

Make your business your place of practice -- your workshop of repetition and road to mastery. Cherish your mistakes as blessed discoveries. Embrace one thing about your business such as a technique, medium, or process, and do it over and over again until it bores you to tears. Then do it some more before you jump to the next new thing. See your clients as coaches on your path to mastery, for the more they receive from you, the more repetition you will experience in your business.

There is no doubt that you exist and have inherent value. However, by building a practice through repetition and mastery you come closer to feeling the awesome power of that value.

The Secret Life of Rubies

Rubies...I'm one chapter away from Victoria Finlay's finale in Jewels: A Secret History, and I got to spend one whole delicious hour discovering a gemstone that ranks high on my mental list of romanticism. A symbol of the heart -- our source of life giving energy -- rubies set my mind racing towards clandestine love affairs, distant lands, Valentines Day, and some very famous, flashy, red shoes!

Nevertheless, once I started reading the chapter on rubies and learned Finlay's search for a story would take her to Burma (Myanmar), I couldn't stop thinking about a strange book I read this past year called Saving Fish from Drowning by Amy Tan. It wasn't the best read and the critics seemed to have agreed, but for some reason I felt compelled to immerse myself in the unfamiliar jungle landscape of Burma (Myanmar).

One of the themes weaving its way through Amy Tan's Saving Fish from Drowning as well as Finlay's chapter on rubies is the Burmese animist belief in nats -- guardian spirits most often associated with elements in nature such as trees, air, rocks, and mountains. Nats protect not only people but places such as a ruby mine.

One of my favorite stories about rubies in Finlay's book Jewels: A Secret History concerns her visit to Kyauk Pyathet Rock Pavilion Pagoda -- a Buddhist temple located in the gem rich area of Mogok, Burma (Myanmar). To Finlay's surprise, this sacred site is loaded with topnotch rubies, yet they aren't being mined. According to one of the Buddhist trustees of the pagoda, the British did attempt to mine this sacred site but found themselves having to leave soon afterward. It sounds like a simple tale of a failed venture, but after reading Saving Fish from Drowning the story behind the story definitely smells of a nat!

Finlay goes on to relay another story about illegal excavations at the Buddhist site that ended in the the deaths of some local miners. Rather then remove the bodies from the collapsed tunnel the officials decided to let their spirits become the guardian nats of the pagoda.

Reading this chapter on rubies in Jewels: A Secret History cemented a concept about animist spirits that I hadn't quite grasped when reading about nats in Saving Fish from Drowning -- inner peace is experienced when knowing that everything is taken care of accordingly. When you live within a belief system where the Buddha looks after the land and everything will measure out in the end exactly as planned, nothing feels like it needs to be saved from its true nature.

Theresa Maxwell: Painting with Light and Color

Lucy and Dolly, Theresa Maxwell: oil

Back in November I saw this beautiful painting of two little boys featured on CS Design's blog Adding a Little Colour to Life and fell in love with the art of Theresa Maxwell. I've seen a lot of artists paint from photographs, but somehow Theresa Maxwell is able to take a static image and create light, feeling, and movement all with brushstrokes and choice of color. You feel as if the scene just happened. I think what I like best is that she is able to take the every day moment, person, or animal and transform it into something special. Here are a few of Theresa Maxwell's gorgeous paintings to enjoy!

Behind the Scenes: Eveolution

silver charm jewelry personalized necklace bracelet
During the beginning phases of Hint Jewelry, I created a visual map of the women who I wanted serve through my business. Since I gravitate towards archetypes, it was easy for me to imagine each woman as a particular Greek goddess. Each woman favors certain characteristics that these mythical woman represent, so I used the Greek pantheon as a way to understand all the facets of being a woman. During my research I came across this fun book called Goddess at Home: Divine Interiors Inspired by Aphrodite, Artemis, Athena, Demeter, Hera, Hestia, and Persephone. It's a book on interior decorating, but what I loved most was the room designs gave me visual blueprint for what certain female personality types would want adorning their life.

The Goddess at Home book also offers some famous personalities as examples of these particular archetypes, and this key information was how I was introduced to the work of Faith Popcorn and the Brain Reserve. When I read her name for the first time, I'm sure I giggled, because anyone with the last name popcorn must be a hoot to be around! However, what spurred my curiosity on was that she was an Athena archetype, a powerful woman of great intellect -- an architect of higher knowledge. Come to find out Faith Popcorn is a trend guru, and since I have some squeamishness around the word "marketing," I decided to check out her web site and educate myself.

I actually had a lot of fun watching the video clips from her TrendBank. With titles like Clanning, Cocooning, Pleasure Revenge, SOS Save our Society, etc., I'm betting you'll be into them too. I saw parts of myself in these trends, and this experience allows me to read advertising with a whole new sense of clarity. Like hey, I now know what fear Wal-Mart is tapping into while try to sell the latest gizmo. From watching TrendBank I've become the cop behind the glass watching big business try to manipulate wants and desires instead of being in the room without a clue.

So I watched Faith Popcorn's videos, took notes, digested, and then filed everything away for later. Nevertheless, with all my neat and tidy self-education there were a few nagging trends that caused me to feel a tad bit uncomfortable with myself and the most noticeable one was called Eveolution.

One of the first workshops on business that I took, the smarmy teacher at the front of the class looked at all of us and said, "entrepreneurs have a hard time letting go over their baby and this always works to their detriment." Ouch! Okay, I heard what he said, and logically his viewpoint appeared sound, so how I was I going to prevent this from happening? Again, I filed it away for later.

Like me, if you are an entrepreneur, one of the reasons for going into business for yourself is because you like to be your own boss. I wanted so desperately to be in charge. In the past, I had experienced organizations and leadership who didn't fully understand my boundless creative energy and how it needed to be used instead of locked in closet. One of my constant problems at work wasn't that I couldn't come up ideas, but rather that I couldn't get others to allow me to take on all the creative projects that my imagination envisioned. Being in business for myself was like a dam breaking and finally I could successfully complete work. Boy was that satisfying!!! Haha! It was also a little wonderfully self-indulgent :)

I don't regret this period of my business, for Hint Jewelry offered me a way to heal a lot of disappointments that I experienced in other jobs. I needed a year to give creative freedom to myself so as to move past the ME getting in the way of serving people through my business. This is where Eveolution comes in. Gosh, did I resist this concept when I heard it. In a nutshell, Faith Popcorn is saying that women have a tremendous impact on business. Women want a relational model. They want to be a part of your business and help build it. I'll be honest, a couple years ago the last thing I wanted was another woman telling me what to do and how to do it. Remember I had just come from a long stint with female authority figures who would rather keep me locked away like Cinderella cleaning up the ashes instead of happily spinning a thousand ideas into reality. I had a lot of healing to do before I could trust another person's input and see another woman as someone who would treat me with mutual respect. See right there I was afraid of letting go of my baby business! So silly, yet it happened so subconsciously.

To me one of the teachings that came out of this experience is be aware of what your business is about. If it's a source of healing, then let it be. When you're ready to let go of it and allow your business to evolve into something entirely different it will. This change for Hint Jewelry happened without me being fully aware that I was making this transition from holding all the cards to letting Eveolution into my business.

It came about from simply wanting to know. I wanted to know what chains women wanted me to purchase. What clasps do they prefer? Do they like silver or gold? Antiqued metal? Big or small? Long or short? I created a sort of a la carte menu called Your Story, where women could build their own personalized necklaces. From this new listing in my Etsy shop, women built my business alongside me like a team. Educating me on what works and what doesn't. The feeling of success I gained from Your Story and Eveolution was ten times more pleasurable because I knew that what I designed is what women really wanted.

Here are some things I've taken away from the experience:
1. Be honest about your business and what you're wanting it to be. Let it be what you need it to be in that moment, and allow yourself the freedom to grow and change with it.
2. Healing yourself first might allow you to serve others better in the long run. Give yourself space for self care.
3. Take note of the stuff that makes you uncomfortable because this is probably an area of learning you are wanting. There's nothing wrong with shelving it until your ready.
4. Consider ways of inviting people into the process of building of your business. Let women show you how they can best be served.

A Nose Knows

One day during vacation I got it into my head that I needed the perfect picture of my cat Hugo's nose. It's just so small and pink and gosh darn cute that I somehow became obsessed with preserving it.

What is it about noses? And why is my kitty so reluctant to have it captured in pictures?

For me, it's one of the most beautiful mini sculptures found on a face. A nose is something that I could spend countless hours exploring the shapes, curves, shadows and lines. It's so intricate yet solid at the same time.

Usually, I spend my time stealing glances at peoples' hands, but I've been known to enjoy a nose or two when someone is not looking. A nose knows. It knows something deeper, which I can't put my finger on.

Each nose is perfectly crafted to fit the face of the person or creature it inhabits, and I suppose this quality is what I like best. Each one is unique and no matter how long I stare at this nose, I still learn something new that keeps me coming back for more.

Hope you're stealing a look at a beautiful nose right now!

The Secret Life of Sapphire

silver wild horse charm jewelry necklaceFree Spirit, Beth Hemmila (Hint Jewelry):
sapphire, sterling silver chain, and fine silver wild horse charm

Sapphires! Simply dreamy! Just saying it conjures up a cascade of pictures in my head for sapphire is one of those words I associate with color memories such as intoxicating eyes or an ocean vista. Unfortunately, I didn't find Victoria Finlay's chapter on sapphires in Jewels: A Secret History as captivating as I had imagined. Anyone else feel ho-hum? Or did I just have unreasonable expectations?

Nevertheless, Finlay is still able to surprise me with interesting tidbits about gemstones and history on her trip to Sri Lanka to uncover the story behind a sapphire her father gave her mother over thirty years ago. Like many of her travel logs, her trip to Sri Lanka is filled with interesting local color and folklore. Once she made the connection that the Sixth Voyage of Sinbad the Sailor is based on real life stories from fourteenth century Muslims traveling to Serendib (the Arab name for Sri Lanka and the root word from which serendipity was born) I was hooked.

One of my favorite sapphire stories from Jewels: A Secret History was the Greek legend that the world's first ring was set with a sapphire and worn by the Titan Prometheus. Just saying the name Prometheus makes me cringe. This mythological character had it hard, first going out of his way to steal fire from Zeus for all of humankind and then punished for his transgression by being bound to a rock for all eternity where a gigantic eagle would eat his liver every day. Ouch!

Luckily for Prometheus, the gods put killing the eagle on Hercules to do list and of course like a rock star this Greek hero was able to slay the mighty beast and get Zeus to free the Titan prisoner. One condition for release was that Prometheus had to wear a ring forged by his chains and the rock he was bound to as a constant reminder to stay on the straight and narrow. The rock fragment used in the ring was sapphire, a stone resembling the color of the hottest part of any flame.

Finlay's gift for writing is that she knows how to save the best for last, weaving her way through the streets and rivers of Sri Lanka, dropping a little breadcrumb trail that quietly leads you to Adam's Peak (or Sri Pada) -- a 7,200 foot sapphire, holy mountain where she ties it all back to a powerful myth of a man bound to a rock, human suffering, and redemption.

Over the last year I've begun to see Hint Jewelry's designs like knitting patterns or cooking recipes. My jewelry designs are just a framework to spark the imagination of others. I can't think of a time where I actually followed a recipe exactly as it was written. I'm always adjusting flavors to my own tastes and dietary needs. The same was true when I was an avid knitter. I replaced yarn with different colors, changed sizing, and added embellishments that suited my style.

Why not think this way in terms of jewelry? My experience last year of designing custom story jewelry for women, showed me that no two beauties think alike, and everyone has their own unique vision.

Maire Dodd Earrings: Love & Hope

Twist and Turns, Mary Jane Dodd of Maire Dodd: lampworked glass and sterling silver

I love the shop tag line for Maire Dodd -- "jewelry to feed your creative spirit." It is so subtle but powerful for me. How many of us creatives actually take the time away from making beautiful things to actually let someone else nourish our creative spirits with an adornment?

Well, I suppose we treat ourselves to pretty baubles that inspire and make us feel more special, but it took me a moment to realize that I don't often consciously say to myself, "this object is feeding my creative spirit." It changes the energy completely, don't you think?

In the midst of a bustling December where I was spinning out of control, I was blessed with a beautiful moment of unexpected peace when I received these wonderful Twist and Turns earrings from my friend, and jewelry designer Mary Jane Dodd shop owner of Maire Dodd.

Mary Jane helped pick out Twists and Turns for me and when I opened them up, I knew they were the right pair of earrings. These earrings are a perfect balance between refined and rustic. The funky little turquoise glass beads say "I want have fun" while the hand stamped words "love" and "hope" let people know that I'm all about what's happening on the inside.

My favorite part of these earrings is the awkward way each of the wires is twisted and turning. THIS IS SO ME! I'm not sure how Mary Jane picked up on this aspect of my personality, but my life could be summed up with the phrase, "Beth is gradually learning to accept and appreciate her awkwardness."

I was instantly nourished! I hope you let your spirit be fed by something unique and find a piece of yourself in Maire Dodd's shop :)

Behind the Scenes: Recycling Silver Wire Scrap and Precious Metal Clay

recycling silver scrap buy back precious metal clayEtsy shop help for recycling precious metal silver scrap

My end of the year project at Hint Jewelry was sorting through all my perfectly imperfect precious metal clay charms to send off for recycling with the rest of my sterling silver scrap wire.

I don't know why this sorting process could cause emotional distress, but it just does. Has anyone seen the TV show Hoarders on A&E? I'd like to think that I'm one of those happy-go-lucky people that have no attachment to objects, but after watching one of these episodes I found myself questioning my emotional connection to these small little hoards that are safely tucked away from the prying eyes of others. Big or small hoard, it's still holding onto a material object so as to create a sense of ground -- a imaginary zone of safety.

So last month I let my little pile of misfit charms go and sent them to Monsterslayer.com for recycling. There are not many opportunities while creating artwork to feel liberated when making mistakes and know you will be able to get money back so as to make some more!

If you have excess sterling silver or gold-filled wire scrap from your jewelry projects, be sure to collect these metals in heavy plastic bags separated by quality classes and alloys while working. In this way, you'll maximize profit on your cost of purchasing these precious materials and contribute to a better environment by recycling. Monsterslayer.com will pay 75% in trade or 60% in cash of the current market value for silver sheet and wire. The process for sending in metal scrap to Monsterslayer.com is pretty simple:

Preparations:
1. Free metal of stones, adhesives, debris and base metal findings.
2. Use a magnet to pull out any steel wool, broken saw blades, and steel cable if present.
3. Separate the scrap by alloy and quality class.

Quality Classes for Silver:
1. Sheet & Wire: Sheet, wire and precious metal clay.
2. Melted & Filings: old jewelry, chains, findings, casting sprues, melted gobs and clean silver filings.

Quality Class for Gold-Filled:
1. Sheet & Wire

There are other places to recycle your metal scrap such as Rio Grande, so if you have a favorite source please be sure to sure the details in a comment. For more information regarding running an online jewelry business or Etsy shop help, check out my blog series Behind the Scenes.

Hope you too are starting the New Year with a clean slate!

The Secret Life of Emeralds

When I hit Victoria Finlay's section on Colombian emeralds in Jewels: A Secret History, I was instantly transported to the movie Romancing the Stone and it's spectacularly large, glittering green treasure. Sad that my closest association with Colombia and emeralds is a Hollywood fantasy, but unfortunately that's about as deep as I get. Well I suppose the Emerald City in the Wizard of Oz comes in as a close second. Who wouldn't be fascinated by a city that reminds you of lime jello?

I love the color of leaves, grass, and moss, but for the life of me I can't get enthused about working with these kelly green stones. They are definitely pretty, and when I see emeralds paired with pearls the effect is quite stunning, but I'm guessing it must take a gorgeous brunette or red head to make these gems really come to life.

Nevertheless, my reluctance to use or wear emeralds, doesn't mean that I am not secretly fascinated by these gems. Perhaps it's my association between emeralds and opulence -- the royal booty of kings and queens -- that makes this stone seem almost magical. In the enchantment department, Finlay's book Jewels: A Secret History delivers a wonderfully romantic story of a queen and her favorite stones, when she travels to Egypt to visit Cleopatra's emerald mines.

By far the best part of this chapter on emeralds was being alongside Finlay as she makes her way across the desert and down into some ancient caves looking for emnants of the elusive stone. Her trip definitely made me feel like I was having an Indiana Jones moment!

She even had me believing in spooky ghost stories and the connection between emeralds and the messenger god Mercury, who is also the deity of sleep and dreams. I promise that you'll love this chapter for it's densely packed with all sorts of archaeological romps and tidbits about some of the most rich and famous of the ancient world.

Behind the Scenes: Vision Board 2010

I've been doing vision boards for the past ten years, so of course it seemed natural to incorporate this exercise into my business strategy. The first time I created a vision board, I hung it in my bathroom so I could see it every day when I woke up. It took about three years, but 85% of what I pasted onto my 2000 vision board came into my life.

I remember feeling like a little kid that struck it rich when I realized things were magically happening that were on my vision board. Now on my sixth or seventh vision board, I realize from a more pragmatic point of view, that it makes complete sense to keep a picture of what you wanting in your mind's eye. Like a basketball player imagining a ball going into the basket before it happens, it's as simple as keeping your intent in focus.

If your mind wanders and connection with what you are really wanting becomes cluttered, then your vision becomes scattered. There is nothing wrong with approaching life like a wandering traveler, but if your heart is yearning to complete something specific then I've found it's better be more like an arrow -- super clear and straight. Like making a list of tasks to accomplish a goal, a vision board keeps your head on the path to where you want your life to be directed.

For 2010, I created a new vision from an old vision board. My 2008-2009 vision board had about twice as many pictures and was all over the place. This was the first time I took a vision that already existed and streamlined it. Wow was it refreshing!

I clarified my life to three things, and now I feel like a gal who has just unhitched her horse from the wagon and took off blazing across the plains.

If you haven't hopped on the vision board train, this might be the year to test it out on your life and your business. I use to cut and paste pictures from magazines, but now I use the Goggle image search and copy photos into a Microsoft Word or Adobe Photoshop document. Lately I've started hanging my vision board right by my bed, so I see it before I go to sleep and right when I wake up. I think of it as a kind of dream floating down into my head at night. When I had an office job, I use to shrink my vision board down to pocket size and carry it in my wallet. This version was always a great little pick me up when things got rough at work.

If you're faithful to your vision board, soon you'll be experiencing a kind of no nonsense attitude. You will begin to have this kind of insatiable drive to complete the vision. For instance, I've had pictures of meditation and yoga on my board for two years, and in the last six months I've become almost relentless about making this part of my life happen. Little obstacles that use get in the way will start to bother you, and you might find yourself saying stuff like, "that's not cutting it for me anymore."

My vision board is my greatest taskmaster because it reminds me why I choose to be here and what I really want to be doing. When you know what you are really wanting from the inside, then the outside knows how to respond to you better. Your vision board is like turning the knob on a radio to clear the static so you can hear your own song more clearly!

P.S. Just had a grand idea! If anyone wants to email me a picture of their vision board, I'll include in a post. Sort of like a gallery of vision and spirit 2010 :)

Valentine Jewelry Collection

Be Mine, Beth Hemmila (Hint Jewelry):
garnet, amethyst, freshwater pearl, tanzanite, peridot, carnelian,
green silk thread, gold-filled chain and wire, and fine silver valentine heart charm

Surprise!! I've been busy thinking about Valentines Day :)

Look at this teeny heart...the perfect way to remind yourself that love is available in every moment. This precious necklace was inspired by the secret garden found in your heart that unfolds as you open. This is the essence of romantic love. It grows, bursts forth, fades, and the cycle continues.

I wanted the flow of color to feel like tiny, spring flowers blossoming in your garden.

There were so many fragrant gems to choose from that I had trouble narrowing down my selection. I knotted these lovelies on fine green silk thread and then attached them to a gold-filled chain for added sparkle.

Flaming Heart Milagro, Beth Hemmila (Hint Jewelry):
garnet, iolite, amethyst, sterling chain and wire, and fine silver flaming heart charm

There is also a divine love the grows from a place of deep tenderness. This necklace is a remembrance of the compassion that you can find in the midst of any situation. No matter if you are in partnership or experiencing the joy of being alone, love is found within. This love is a fountain that flows ceaselessly through your heart, feeding you and the people that surround you. It's as easy as touching that soft spot inside and just being with it. You don't need to do anything to be loved or to love. It's already happening. You just have to tune in!

Joy, Beth Hemmila (Hint Jewelry): sterling chain and wire,
gold-filled wire, pink tourmaline, and fine silver field of flowers charm

One of the greatest loves is joy in living. Being able to look outside your window and embrace the world no matter the weather. This feeling may come and go, but I'm guessing we all return to it over time.

Joy, Beth Hemmila (Hint Jewelry): sterling chain and wire,
gold-filled wire, pink tourmaline, and fine silver field of flowers charm

Burying your nose in a field of flowers, is as close to heavenly joy as you can get. To breath in the scent of being alive and enjoy every richness it brings. This little patch of flowers is a remembrance of that love for being alive.

Each of these necklaces and the featured Valentine charms can be found at Hint Jewelry's shop. This year I will be traveling to the Tucson Bead Show and closing Hint Jewelry during first week in February, so if you want something special for Valentines Day, be sure to connect with me during the month of January.

Happy New Year!!!

Hello 2010!
Hope you're as excited as I am about the next decade!!!

I'm so glad you've tuned into my blog today. I feel good and see so much positive stuff coming around the corner that I hope you're sensing the high five meant just for you. It's good to be here. Right here with you. In this place and time. Just like my little backyard Buddha dusted with snow, quietly waiting for spring, I'm going to take it patiently this year. Listening to the stuff I know deep inside and choosing to act from a place of centeredness.

One of my ongoing 2010 themes will be total well-being. Like most people, I go through cycles where I consciously take care of myself and then something happens where I get caught up in my own personal drama and let things slide. Does this happen to you?

This is the year where I'm going to weave well-being into the fabric of my every day life. Wellness is no longer a lifestyle for me to try on and then abandon when I get bored. It's going to be as integral as breathing.

Wondering why I'm so keyed up? Have I been dipping into the hot chocolate again?

No, it's just yoga.

For my vacation, instead of traveling to an exotic destination, I decided to live out my fantasy lifestyle and take a trip inside. For a week, I have been enjoying connecting with my body and spirit through yoga, meditation, and cooking up lots of yummy fresh food using my new Vita-Mix blender.

This experience showed me how much of my life is choice. I choose what I do, how I am, who comes into my life, and what experiences befallen me. Where I put my energy, attention, money, and time lays the foundation for the next experience coming into my life.

It seems so simple. Like enjoying the snow that is here today and gone tomorrow. However, I know I've trained myself to think ahead to the next moment, hour, day, week, month, and year. It feels safe imagining the next steps, but this year I'm going to exercise patience and try to put my deepest energies into right now.

Are you ready to connect with the best parts of yourself this year? Have you been seeing something new in yourself you want to investigate and refine?

Thank you to all the people who have sent me warm thoughts while I was away, and let me know my words are making a genuine connection. Wishing you all the best for the New Year!
