but I 'm starting to get excited about seeing the Pacific ocean again,

Maisie DeVore: No Step is Too Small

I stumbled across the story of Maisie DeVore, an eighty-three year old angel who collected and recycled aluminum cans for close to thirty years, raising over $73,000 for a community pool in her hometown of Eskridge, Kansas.

Not only is this story filled with the hopes and dreams of a woman who wants to contribute to her community's health and well-being, it reminded me that it takes amazing strength of character to keep doing what your doing to reach a goal.

Sometimes on the way to realizing a dream you feel like you are just "plodding along," but now after hearing Maisie DeVore's story I see that each of those little steps are part of the grand plan. I guess the best idea is to just keep moving forward no matter how big or small your steps appear :)

What steps are you taking today?

Beth Manifesto: Why Art?

Self-Discipline

Self-Reliance

Self-Expression

Self-Confidence

When I was learning to be an art teacher, these four universal needs were the essence of my purpose. I wanted all my students to leave the classroom knowing for certain that these things existed within them. Nine years later, and I still feel the same way. Moreover, I've noticed that these core values are actually things that I have been actively growing in myself since I wrote these words down as a young, idealistic teacher who was eager to affect change in other peoples lives.

Back then I was incredibly passionate about art and how it could have a positive impact on the hearts and minds of my students. I don't know what happen, but I seemed to have lost a little vigor along the way. Reading back through my statement of purpose from teaching has lit a fire within me. Though I don't teach art, my statement could have been "Why Computers? Why Yoga? Why Spirituality? Why Jewelry? Why Food?" Art was simply the medium for me to communicate much broader issues that can be found within any learning context.

I see now that this tiny seed I planted nine years ago has truly taken root and continually informs all that I do. I hope you find some nugget of truth for you in the Beth Manifesto where you begin to see art or something else that you do in a new way.

Why Art?

Art Exercises the Mind
The making of art evokes, develops, and refines various forms of thinking: problem solving, sequencing, judging, and assessing. This type of cognitive development coupled with the emotive qualities of art trains students to cope with the ambiguities and uncertainties of life. Art mimics real adult tasks that don't have concrete outcomes and moves beyond the rules of formally structured curricula.

Art Cultivates Cultural Capital
...art establishes the basic human truths which must serve as the touchstone of our judgment.
- John F. Kennedy, 35th President of the United States

Art cultivates the senses and constructs cultural meaning. It is a means by which we make sense of the world and our individual and collective experiences.

Art Creates Literacy
I found that I could say things with color and shapes that I had no words for.
- Georgia O'Keefe, artist

One of an educator's highest aims is to promote effective communication. Visual imagery is essential to social communication, and therefore, necessary in the development of a literate society.

Art Promotes Problem-Based Learning
The creation of art begins with the asking of a question. Art in its most elemental form is a problem solved, where students learn about innovation, mental persistence, and living with ambiguity.

Art is Flexible
Art enhances creativity in high academic achievers and stimulates the learning process in children who might otherwise be left behind.

Arise

Arise, Beth Hemmila (Hint Jewelry): sterling silver angel wing charm
Happy Easter to you and your loved ones!

The other day I was in a class where the facilitator asked, "What does Easter mean to you?" Out of nowhere a soft spoken gentleman said, "sunshine." My whole being smiled because somewhere in my cluttered brain I understood the poetry of his memory.

I couldn't put Easter into words, so I designed this necklace
in citrine, peridot, aquamarine, and pearl that feels like
the picture this fellow painted for me of his memories
.

Sometimes I don't have words, so I borrow other people's stories when they
express things I only know how to feel but don't know how to say.

How thankful I am to have other people
point the way to the best of memories :)

What does Easter mean to you?

Behind the Scenes: Reinvigorating Your Business with a New Elevator Speech

Has the vision behind your business become worn out?
Are you sleeping your way through building your business?

Three years ago, one of the first tasks my marketing coach assigned me was to write an elevator speech. This exercise was extremely difficult during the launching of Hint Jewelry because I still wasn't sure what it was that I wanted to do. Nevertheless, writing the elevator speech forced me to envision Hint Jewelry's mission and directed my energy in a positive way.

A couple years later, and I've realized that I may need to write a new elevator speech because I have a stronger feel for what I'm doing and a better idea of where I want to go. Nobody mentioned a rewrite, but perhaps that was implied. You change and your business changes. I need to remember to communicate that change to people.

This elevator speech is also a tool that you can use for networking a career or when meeting new friends. An elevator speech doesn't have to be about what your selling but could be something you use to explain your purpose in life. How many times have you encountered a stranger in the grocery store or at a party and they ask, "What do you do?" Many times this leads to verbal fumbling, so wouldn't it be fun if you had a clear vision of who you are communicated in an effective way that could lead to more conversation instead of awkward silences?

Check out this great online tool designed by the Harvard Business School and reinvigorate your business or your focus in life with a well crafted elevator pitch.

Gratitude for Each New Day

New Day, Beth Hemmila (Hint Jewelry): sterling silver Egyptian scarab beetle charm
In this necklace, I wanted to capture the essence of what it feels like to embrace each New Day. Featuring turquoise, apatite, aquamarine, peridot, pearl, kyanite gemstones, and sterling silver scarab and dove of peace charms from Hint Jewelry, this necklace calls to mind those lazy spring days when you take the time to lay in the fresh cut grass and watch clouds make pictures in the sky.

Sometimes I forget to have gratitude for what each New Day brings, but lately I've had a song of hope in my heart that is yearning to be heard, so I brought it to life through colorful gemstones and Hint Jewelry's sterling silver Egyptian scarab charm.

The Year of Chewing Food Dangerously

For over 40 years, I didn't chew my food. That all changed last year when I chose to alter my lifestyle and diet, which led to meeting with a health practitioner who opened my eyes to the relationship between chewing and a vibrant digestive system.

Moreover, the act of consuming food is in itself a sacred connection, and by consciously chewing and savoring meals, I am building a deeper relationship with the universe. Think of it this way, if you are only chewing a mouthful of food three to five times, that's like a brief wave to a friend across the street as you quickly continue on your way. Alternatively, you could chew a mouthful of food twenty-five to fifty times and this is like sitting down with your dearest friend for a delicious afternoon of laughter and conversation.

The first thing I noticed when I tried to consciously chew a mouthful of food twenty-five times is how frustrated and tired I felt. Eating became my second job and that was no fun for after all I was seeking food as a form of escape from work. Nevertheless, I continued on my way, staying aware of my resistance and how chewing changed my whole dining experience. Later as my chewing progressed, I became fuller faster, expanded my range of taste, and actually desired less food because when I chewed more, I satisfied my need through the act of savoring.

I have no doubt that consciously chewing my food has improved my health, my relationship to food, and brought me closer to the sacred universe.

Hatha Yoga: Union and Reunion

sterling silver Zen Lotus charm, Beth Hemmila (Hint Jewelry)

Today I was thinking about the root meaning of Hatha Yoga. "Ha" and "tha" are the union of sun and moon. The bringing together, harmonizing, connecting, and balancing of two opposites. It's a wonderful image for me to see when I stretch out on my yoga mat.

Then I was thinking that this union is also a type of reunion that happens daily. As we flow through our day perhaps there is a breaking apart into little pieces when our attention is divided between many tasks and different people, challenging us to find centering and reunite with what is most essential.

May you find reunion every day...

Painter Trude Parkinson: Walking Through Walls

Last week I happened upon the paintings of artist Trude Parkinson featured on our local PBS show called Oregon Art Beat. I thought you might enjoy her collection of paintings, which have a second artwork on the back in the form of a collage.

I love this idea that what is hidden and what is shown to the world has a connection. What do you think?

One Fall & Carl the Mailman

Carl the Mailman filming One Fall, Portland, Oregon: photograph by Dave Tuttle
I'm not even a big fan of wrestling, but there was something about reading Carl the Mailman's story in a local newspaper that made me want to donate to his first feature-length documentary entitled One Fall. Maybe it was because when I read the article, I remembered walking home the other day and seeing a mailman smile and say "hi" to me, and I thought, "Gosh that guy seems happy. I feel like my life is a little bit lighter right now."

In that incredibly brief passing moment, I exchanged hellos with Carl the Mailman -- one of the amazing people who serve our community by delivering messages. A couple days later instead of tossing The Hollywood Star News into the recycling bin like I normally do, I felt called to read it cover to cover and there was Carl the Mailman's project One Fall on the last page. I started laughing because honestly if Carl the Mailman hadn't said hello I wouldn't have read the article, clicked on his Web site, or donated to his venture.

Isn't that amazing?! Just stop and think how many times an opportunity is hanging on the sincerity of a smile or hello.  How many times did you miss a small yet important exchange because your head was buried in work or up in the clouds?

From this experience, I realized a couple of important ideas:
  • In every connection there exists the possibility of a deeper promise just waiting for me to recognize it.
  • Being in the presence of genuinely happy people gets me excited about discovering what it is that makes them happy. Moreover, while feeling this elated sense of gratitude for sharing in their happiness, my natural inclination to offer help takes over because I just want to make them feel even happier.
  • To fulfill a dream, you need to ask others for help. By allowing others to help move your dream forward, you up the inspiration quotient for a whole community. One big dream builds momentum for the future of many little dreams.
Please check out Carl the Mailman's project One Fall, the story of a true Portland character Dan "The Man" who despite many setbacks continues to follow his dream of being a wrestling promoter. If you feel called to be a supporter of dreams, then I hope you will donate a small sum to the film. If not, perhaps you will take an opportunity to check out all the other interesting creative projects on Kickstarter.com that are simply waiting for that special supporter to come their way.

Thank you to Carl the Mailman for sharing with me the gift of staying connected to the present moment and allowing me to help fulfill his dream. May you all be so blessed as to awaken to the many Carl the Mailmans carrying messages out there for you.

New Shoots

Spring is happening in Portland, and I've been enjoying watching new shoots sprout up around town. I have some new shoots of my own that are starting to develop, and in order to make them blossom I need to close Hint Jewelry for a short period of time.

I'm closing the shop at the end of Tuesday, April 5th and will reopen on Monday, April 11th. Many blessings for a happy and spring filled week!
