You know you are truly alive when you’re living among lions.
- Isak Dinesen, Out of Africa

One of my favorite films is Out of Africa. It's one of the few movies I've owned for I consider it visually better than reading the book. Meryl Streep is stunning and of course Robert Redford plays the free spirit, which is hard to resist.

In the beginning of the movie, the character Karen lands in Africa wearing her proper European attire. One of my favorite dresses in the movie is this black and white outfit, which seems to foretell a running theme throughout the story -- nothing is truly black and white, be it the color of your skin or your views about the world.

So I designed this one of a kind Out of Africa necklace for Hint Jewelry that is all about black and white with a little bit of African sunshine. Using freshwater peals, onyx, black tourmaline, and citrine, I tried to capture both the elegance of Karen's character in Out of Africa as well as her independent spirit in the asymmetrical design.

The Out of Africa necklace can be worn alone or you can purchase a charm from Hint Jewelry to personalize it. I've designed this necklace so charms can be added and removed to suit your mood.

For me, Out of Africa was about loving the freedom found in each person even though it might be heartbreaking. Throughout the story there are periods of great romance and moments of being alone. It models how life can be a meditation of contrasts: sometimes like a rain soaked, lush valley and other times like a dry, stark desert.

However, one of the most breathtaking scenes I remember is when Denys takes Karen up in a new airplane to see Africa from God's eyes. Back in the 1920s and 30s, flying was rare and an experience like this must have taken one's breath away: To have seen the immensity of the world from above and understand that nothing is as certain as black and white.
